The Power of Writing

I recently encountered the true power of writing. As a professional writer I have been left a bit without inspiration given many life altering things that recently happened in our life. I haven’t been inspired to write,  much less read anything besides my regular Entertainment Weekly magazine. Even reading that has taken some effort despite my sheer typical enjoyment.

My inspiration has came back like a freight train. Much contemplation about life and soul searching has brought me into a new light. However, it wasn’t until I read the book A Symphony in the Dark by Rebecca Rainey-Mutz and Barbara Rainey that helped me to direct my inspiration and show me where to go next. Most of those close to our family know that we recently experienced the loss of our nine-day-old infant son, Grady James. As an idea of a memoir about Grady’s life and many spiritual occurrences came shortly after his passing, I was left with no direction or inspiration.

Having been a writer of all sorts for many years now, I was distraught not knowing where to turn next. After reading this particularly touching book I found myself sobbing and indulging in the Rainey-Mutz story that so closely mirrored mine. Completing the book in its entirety in a little under 24 hours, I then found myself waking up Sunday morning around 7 a.m. and writing for the next seven hours with no stopping.

As I recover from my marathon writing session, I find myself contemplating the power of writing and how things can affect our lives without even knowing it. I’ve wrote before about the power of professional writing in the workplace, but I’ve never discussed how substantial writing is in our personal lives.

If we think about all of the things that occur in a days passing from magazines, newspapers, to social media posts, and even a best seller, it is truly fascinating how writing can hold so much power. It influences our emotions, our thoughts, and even where to turn next.

So for me, I am utilizing my inspiration that derived from the honest and beautiful words that these authors shared to share my own. A story is not worth anything if it’s left untold.

As I continue to enhance my professional writing skills, I am embarking on memoir writing. This is entirely new for me and I am learning the craft as each paragraph is formed. It is healing and also empowering to share the ideas that have only been held in my heart for the last months. I hope to share more about my memoir journey and how it is taking shape. I am nearly 20,000 words in and eager to continue, because I was given what some artists search their entire careers for; I was given the power of writing.
